Rundale palace
| Rundale Palace (located 80 km south of Riga and only 15 km from the border with Lithuania) is one of the most outstanding monuments of Baroque and Rococo art in Latvia. It was constructed in the 1730s by Bartolomeo Rastrelli as a summer residence of Ernst Johann von Biron, the Duke of Courland. The major part of the interior work was done in the period between 1765 and 1768. The Italian masters from St. Petersburg, Francesco Martiniand Carlo Zucchi, created paintings on the ceilings and walls while sculptor Johann Michael Graff from Berlin made stucco decorations on a background of artificial marble. The palace is also very popular for its reconstructed French formal garden. - Pass through Bauska. A city with more than 400 years of history. You will see buildings from the 18th century and a beer brewery which was founded more than 140 years ago. - Best introduction to the Rundale Palace – see not only more than 40 rooms of the palace but also go down to the Palace cellar and the Exhibition of sarcophagi. - After the palace our guide will show you the French formal garden, which is even more beautiful during the peak rose-blooming season. - On the way back, see the newly-renovated Bauska medieval castle, which was built in the 16th century to protect the region from our neighbours the Lithuanians. Nowadays we have really good relations with them, so the castle is now a museum of history. - On your way home, talk to our guides about all things which interest you or just relax with some beer and good music, according to your preference.
